Cabo San Lucas Travel Guide

Positioned on the southernmost point of the eight-hundred-mile-long Baja Peninsula, the vacation paradise of Cabo San Lucas has been a seaside resort destination for over five decades. Cabo rests on the coastline of a picturesque harbor near the junction of two immense bodies of water, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez (also called the Gulf of California).

Traveling through the Baja California Peninsula, especially in the case of taking the ever-popular road trip from Tijuana at the Mexico-US border all the way down to Cabo San Lucas, brings you face to face with a uniquely Bajan culture. The regions in the Baja peninsula were often neglected by the rest of Mexico.

Navigator Francisco de Ulloa guided explorer Hernan Cortez to what is now present-day Cabo San Lucas in 1537. In no time, the Spanish founded a lively port on the shores of the massive body of water that soon would bear the name of Cortez. With the increase in traffic and trade, also came an influx of pirate raids.

Owned by rock legend Sammy Hagar, the Cabo Wabo name already has quite the reputation before you even see it. The Cabo Wabo in Cabo San Lucas was one of the city's first major nightclubs of size and elaborateness.

Located at the end of a 775-mile-long peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is not particularly easy to get to by car or bus. It's a daunting task to drive from the top of the peninsula down to Los Cabos, but one that some people say is rewarding and fun, as you get to drive through the smaller towns of the Baja California Peninsula, whose locals are said to be some of the friendliest in all of Mexico.

Cabo San Lucasis home to excellent resort weather for most of the year, with hot temperatures, clear skies and minimal humidity. Hardly any rain ever falls on the southern Baja Peninsula - the region has a median of ten inches of rain annually. Residents of Los Cabos enjoy 300 days of sunshine every year.
